 Sissel is Sensational!!!Nov 18, 2007

This is a sensational performance! I attended it live with my daughter and was amazed at the beauty of Sissel's voice and how it blends so well with the Tabernacle Choir. It was so moving and powerful it was like being in heaven. Very few performers have the voice quality of Sissel and it is truly amazing the sound quality in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City (the hall is large enough to park a Boeing 747 inside).
Sissel's is a native born Norwegian and little known in the US, although her popularity is growing. Her vocal abilities are hard to explain without actually hearing her voice. Her voice is alive and vibrant and clear. The interviews with Sissel, that are included on the DVD, give you some insights into this wonderful performer's personality.
Her performance is a real treat at Christmas time. I recommend this DVD highly. The program is a mix of traditional Christmas carols and Norwegian folk melodies that celebrate the birth of the Lord, Jesus Christ. The sound quality of the recording is very professional.

This is a fantastic DVD! I was able to attend the performance live and this is almost as good. It was like being in heaven. The sound quality is SOOOO excellent on my Bose system, that it is almost better than a live performance. It is amazing that they get such good quality from a large venue like the Conference Center. I have been a Sissel fan for years since living in Norway almost 20 yrs ago near the beginning of her career. She has always done a lot of Christmas music as well as many musical styles. Her abilities have really expanded since then, and she is a great entertainer. Two songs on this are Norwegian christmas carols, sung in Norwegian.
Watching her perform is a treat. She was like the icing on top of the cake when added with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, her voice blends with yet extends theirs. She is also very charming in person as well, having interviewed her the previous year she performed with the Tabernacle choir. You can get a sense of that as well on this DVD extra interview. I highly recommend this DVD.

Sissel's Northen Lights is CD is Absolutely Excellent!! Her voice is so beautiful. I hope she comes to the US to do another concert soon. I saw her once in Philly and she is worth every penny.
I love all the songs on this cd but I have 3 that are my favs, jesu, joy of a man's desiring, Sarah's Song and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Keep all all the good work Sissel and Thanks to Amazon.com for making it available to download right away!!

The superb music of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been a tradition for many Americans for decades. This more recent of their Christmas releases makes apparent that this organization just seems to get better and better with the passage of time. I first came across the performance while it was being broadcast on TV and just couldn't take my eyes off of it till the after the closing credits. I was not familiar with Sissel before I heard this performance but I quickly became captivated by her singing and found myself wanting to learn more about her other work..
I note that a previous reviewer commented upon the style of the musical arrangements, offering the opinion that they demonstrated the "cleverness" of the arranger but detracted from the overall performance. Far from it, in my opinion! I believe that the beauty and freshness of the arrangements in this performance (and in the many other performances by the choir) just help make their music that much more special and inviting. Indeed, I found all key aspects of this production (music performance, music arrangements, photography, choreography and direction) to be outstanding. The Norwegian themes throughout the presentation added an unusual and beautiful dimension to this Christmas celebration.
Depending upon the audio quality of your DVD playback equipment, you may want to consider getting the companion CD "Spirit of the Season" as well. This contains the same musical offerings but in high quality stereo CD format (the CD doesn't contain the visual experience of course, which is a key part of the total performance). The quality of the musical selections is so high that there is ample justification for both versions in my opinion.
The recorded quality of the audio on the DVD is the same high quality as on the CD however (in fact the audio on the DVD has the added benefit of being recorded in "surround sound" if you have a DVD audio system capable of reproducing it) so if your DVD playback system is already connected to a high quality audio system (as some are), you probably won't need both versions.

I attended this concert with my 8 year-old son. It was the first time I had ever heard of Sissel, but I had seen videos of past MTC Christmas concerts and figured it couldn't be too bad.
I was absolutely amazed by Sissel's voice, and went right out the next day and bought several of her albums (including The Best of Sissel). All of them are among my favorite and most used CDs.
The concert was a bit much for my son...it will be a few years before he will appreciate that kind of thing. But my mother, remembering how I raved about the concert, bought this DVD for my family for Christmas. We'll enjoy it for years to come.
